Making a Lasting Impression - 10 Ways to Become Unforgettable After a Networking Event

Ever been to a networking event, handed out a bunch of business cards, and then wondered how to stand out from the crowd afterward? We’ve all been there, mingling with new faces, exchanging pleasantries, and hoping to leave a lasting impression. But how do you ensure that you’re not just another name in the pile? Let’s dive into some fun and actionable tips to make sure you’re remembered long after the networking event is over.

1. Personalise Your Business Cards

I truly believe that a business card is the simplest and most effective way to ensure someone you meet can stay in touch with you. I have an entire other blog post about my love for businesses cards but in summary it's small, fits easily in a pocket or bag, and is super convenient to carry around. BUT make sure your business card isn’t just another piece of paper. Add a unique touch—whether it’s a memorable tagline, a professional photo, or a fun fact about yourself. This makes it easier for people to recall who you are after the event.

2. Always ask for other people’s business cards – it shows you are interested in them.

So, things are going great at the networking event. The conversation is flowing, and you might have even shared some awesome brochures showcasing your amazing products and services. Then they ask for your card. You confidently hand over your shiny new business card, shake their hand, and promise to keep in touch. But wait—don't forget to ask for their card too! This isn't a one-way street. Asking for their card shows you're a considerate networker who values mutual connections. Nobody likes someone who's all about "me, me, me." Make sure to get their card in case you can refer business to them or need to stay in touch for other reasons. Remember, business is all about building relationships!

3. Jot down notes on the back to remember who they were and what they were selling.

You've taken my advice and collected business cards from everyone you meet. But a few weeks later, you find them at the bottom of a bag or pocket, and now you can't remember who was who or what you discussed. Following up becomes tough if you can't recall what to follow up on! A top tip to help you remember when and where you met someone and what you talked about is to jot down some notes on the back of their card as soon as possible after the event. Or even during the event! It doesn’t matter – just do it!

4. Connect on Social Media

After the event, connect with your new acquaintances on LinkedIn or follow them on Instagram. Send a personalized message with your connection request. Something like:

“Hi [Name], Really enjoyed our chat about [topic] at [event name]. Looking forward to connecting and seeing how we can support each other’s ventures!”

By staying in their social media orbit, you keep the connection warm and open for future interactions.

5. Share Valuable Content

Now that you’re connected, stand out by sharing relevant and valuable content. If you discussed a particular topic, send them an article, book recommendation, or a useful tool related to that subject. This positions you as a resourceful and knowledgeable person who brings value to the table.

6. Host a Follow-Up Meeting or Event

Take the initiative and organize a small follow-up meetup or a casual coffee session for the people you met at the event. It’s a great way to reinforce connections and deepen relationships in a more relaxed setting.

7. Be Consistent and Authentic

People remember those who are authentic and consistent. Be genuine in your interactions and true to your brand. Whether it’s in your emails, social media posts, or face-to-face meetings, let your personality shine through.

8. Offer Help Before Asking for It

Show your new connections that you’re willing to help them before you need anything in return. Whether it’s sharing a contact, giving advice, or offering a free consultation, being helpful makes you memorable and appreciated.

9. Stay Visible

Stay on their radar by occasionally checking in, commenting on their posts, or sharing their content. It’s a subtle way to remind them of your presence without being overbearing.

10. Reflect and Improve

After every networking event, take a moment to reflect on what worked and what didn’t. Fine-tune your approach for the next event. The better you get at networking, the more memorable you’ll become.

Wrapping It Up

Networking isn’t just about making contacts; it’s about building relationships. By following up promptly, offering genuine help, and staying in touch, you can ensure that you’re not just another face in the crowd. Be memorable, be genuine, and watch your network—and business—grow.
